Golden Sunset Over the Sea of Galilee
Travellers pause on a hillside path above the Sea of Galilee as the sun sets across the lake.
View full size The engraving looks down on the lake from near the ruins of Saphet, the hill town now called Safed, north-west of the water. The colour interpretation follows it closely, keeping the ruined hill town, the walker with his staff, the two riders and the distant sails, and fills the scene with sunset light across the lake and the hills beyond.
The Sea of Galilee, also called the Lake of Tiberias, is where Jesus called the fishermen Peter, Andrew, James and John, and where the Gospels place the calming of the storm. Much of his ministry took place in the towns along its shore.
This is an artistic interpretation of the engraved view, not a geographically exact reconstruction of the place.
