ENGRAVINGS CATALOGUE

The engravings,
artists and engravers.

The illustrations in The Comprehensive Family Bible were not anonymous decorations. The book’s printed List of the Engravings names each subject, its scripture reference, its painter and its engraver. This catalogue brings that record together with photographs of the plates themselves and, where one exists, the contemporary artwork each inspired.

List of the Engravings, Old Testament page (photographed from the book)

The Old Testament page lists 35 illustrations, from the frontispiece of John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness to The Hill of Samaria. It records, for example, The Expulsion by John Tenniel, engraved by William Holl, and The Finding of Moses after Köhler, engraved by H. Robinson.

Every Old Testament entry below is transcribed from that page, keeping the printed spellings and abbreviations, with a modern reference alongside. The New Testament page has not been photographed yet, so New Testament plates are listed from the credit lines printed beneath each plate.

Uncertain readings are flagged rather than guessed. Source: The Comprehensive Family Bible, Blackie and Son, List of the Engravings and plate credits, photographed from a surviving copy.
