Golden Hour at Ancient Sidon
Fishermen mend their nets on the shore at Sidon as the sun sets beyond the sea castle.
View full size The engraving shows the harbour of Saide, the ancient Sidon, with boats drawn up on the beach and the sea castle standing offshore on its arched causeway. The colour interpretation follows it closely, keeping the castle and causeway, the lateen-rigged boat, the fishermen with their nets, the palms, the minarets and even the crescent moon, and adds a blazing sunset over the sea.
Sidon was one of the oldest ports of the Phoenician coast. The Gospels record Jesus travelling into the region of Tyre and Sidon, and on his voyage to Rome Paul’s ship called at Sidon, where he was allowed ashore to visit friends. The sea castle itself was built much later, by the Crusaders.
This is an artistic interpretation of the engraved view, not a geographically exact reconstruction of the place.
